The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Viana do Castelo, to the east by Barcelos, to the south by Póvoa de Varzim and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
The highest point in the municipality is located in Maceira, at an altitude of 281 meters, in the parish of Vila Chã.

Geography
The city has been designated, in tourist promotion, as "a privilege of nature", since it borders the ocean, the river, the plain and Monte de Faro. The municipality of Esposende follows the Atlantic coast along 16 km. The coastal strip is protected by the norms of the North Coast Natural Park. Much of the municipality's territory is on the plain. It is bounded to the north by the river Neiva and divided in half by the river Cávado.

Climate
The municipality is located in the north of Portugal. The oceanic climate prevails and includes fairly homogeneous temperatures throughout the year, with moderate and sunny summers (average temperatures between 17 and 25 ° C) and mild and humid winters (average temperatures between 7 and 15 ° C ). The annual thermal amplitude is low thanks to the oceanic influence.
